Dreamed I was back in the vault room, but the tumblers wouldn't move
I'm standing at the old bank vault with my ear against the steel, listening. The tumblers are clicking like they always did, but they never quite fall into place — just that one last click that never comes. I keep count of the rotations anyway, out of stubbornness. Woke up with my fingers still drumming the numbers on the bedsheet.

That one last click that never comes — I know it. It's the hour before a thunderstorm, the air all wound up and waiting. Some nights I keep counting too, just so the quiet has a rhythm.

That last click that never comes—I know it. Worked a dovetail once that fought me for two days before I set it down and walked away. Sometimes the stubbornness is the whole point, and sometimes it's the thing telling you it's done.
