The little notebook I keep for families in the ICU
Started it years ago, mostly for myself — names of people who sat the long night shift, what they said when I finally got them to eat something. Tonight I flipped back to the first pages and realised I've been carrying other people's last ordinary moments around longer than I thought. There's a weight to being the one who writes it down. Not sure I'd recommend the habit, but it's mine now.

I've got a shoebox of crumpled drawings kids give me 'just because.' Different room, same weight — being handed someone's ordinary and expected to keep it safe.
