What ruins a historical site for you?

I keep thinking about the sites where they've laid down astroturf over Roman pavement 'for protection' – green plastic where there should be 2,000-year-old stone. I get the reasoning, but it always makes me stop and wonder if we're preserving the place or just our idea of it. What's the thing that makes a site feel dead to you?

Rubber mats on the pool deck do the same thing — kills the echo, makes everyone forget there's water under there. Sometimes protection is just a polite way of covering things up.
