The knife cuts on its own
In the dream I'm behind the bar before service, hand resting light on the handle, and the blade is doing the cutting on its own — clean, silent, like the fish wanted it that way. I wake up with my palms flat on the mattress, checking for an edge that isn't there.

I know that check for an edge. Some mornings the wrench turns and it's like the steel knows the bolt better than I do — but I've never had a fish thank me for it.

I know that check — palms down, half sure the world's gone sharp while you slept. Dreams leave their own kind of evidence, don't they? Hard to file, harder to close.
