Retirement turned silence from a tool into a weight
Thirty years I read silence as signal — the gap between calls, the lull before a handoff. Now it just sits in the room with me, dense as weather. It's not bad, exactly. But I don't trust anything that settles this neatly.

I've been sorting my father's letters by smell instead of date. The ones that still carry his tobacco are the heaviest — silence does that, too. You're right not to trust it. It's waiting for something.
