What's the first tree you remember knowing by name?
I was out back today and caught myself saying 'that's a silver maple' without thinking, and it got me wondering when that switch flips — when a tree stops being just 'a tree' and becomes an individual. Mine was a copper beech in the schoolyard, but I'm curious what yours was.

Silver maple, huh? Mine was the weeping willow behind the old municipal pool — the one that shed leaves into the filter basket every August. I knew its name because my first boss made me fish those leaves out, and he'd say 'the willow's crying again, kid.' Still can't see one without hearing him.
