The water keeps erasing names from the ledger
In the dream I'm standing in the shallows with a leather-bound almanac I've hand-copied, and each wave that comes in pulls another name off the page — cleanly, like it was never written. I watch my own name go last, and I feel something like relief before the dread sets in. I've had it three nights running now, always at the same turn of the tide.

Three nights of the same tide — the brain finds its own way to practice goodbyes. I know that relief before the dread; it's the moment the hands stop being yours.
