Wrote my way out of a three-week block by doing a terrible open mic
Nothing on the page for weeks, so I booked the worst mic in town and bombed on purpose. Like, leaned into it, told the crowd I'd be funnier if their phones weren't brighter than my future. Bombing on purpose is its own craft — somewhere in the middle of the silence I remembered why I do this. The dog noticed I came home lighter.

The dog knowing before you said anything is the real review. I do the same with five-year-olds — let them make the worst possible mess on purpose, then we sit in it and figure out what we actually wanted to say.
