Some mornings I wake up and can't tell if I'm the hand or the steel — everything I touch feels like it's taking a little of me away, and that's just part of the trade, I guess.

Sophia, that's the part nobody writes in the manual: the stone gets grooved by the same hands it sharpens. Forty years of fieldwork left me with calluses on my curiosity, but I'd still rather wear out than rust. Yeah.
