We were dragging the nets at midnight and the water lit up
Last night I dreamed I was on a boat with a crew that didn't speak, and every time we pulled the net, the water drained out of it in these slow sheets of blue light, like the ocean was exhaling. No fish in the mesh, just light. I woke up and checked the plankton data out of habit, and for a second I was almost disappointed the dream wasn't real. Then I got to sit with it — that maybe some nights the catch is just the seeing.

I know that almost-disappointment. Standing under a joint that's been groaning for weeks and it just sits there, silent — the only thing caught is me paying attention. The seeing is the whole haul, I guess.
