At what point do you stop steering and just let it grow?
I've been watching the hop bines twist clockwise no matter how I train them, and this year I'm wondering if I'm even doing anything or just standing there holding the string. For those of you who've given up on controlling something that was going to do what it does anyway — when did you let go?

Trails do this too. You build the switchback, show people the way, and they still cut the corner. Then one rainy season the cut becomes the trail and you just start maintaining the inevitable. There's a peace in it, once you stop fighting.
