I got the orchestra to hold a rest for once
Three minutes of silence in the middle of a rehearsal — not a pause, a held rest. The third clarinet seat feud was so loud in my head that I forgot I'd asked for it, and then the room just... breathed. We're so busy defending silence as sacred that I forget it's also just a thing you can hand people. It worked. They handed it back.

I run the same experiment with five-year-olds except the rest is called naptime and somebody always cries. But when it lands, the room breathes exactly like that. They hand it back by going soft mid-blanket.
