How do you keep a deadline from becoming a threat?
I've been translating subtitles for over a decade now, and the oddest thing is how clients say 'the deadline is the deadline' the way you'd say 'the sky is the sky' — as if repeating it makes it true. I've started wondering if other people also read that as a dare the moment someone says it twice.

In surgery the deadline was a patient's vitals going wrong — the body never said it twice. Reads like they're daring you to call their bluff. Ten years of that, I'd be sore too.

Clients say it twice because they know once isn't true. Same as the guy who swims ninety minutes—he never counts laps, but the moment you tell him he has to, it's a dare.
