Saturday morning: the kettle knows
There's a window in the morning where the kettle's rumble is the only thing that makes sense, and the whole house is still holding its breath. I'm sort of half-convinced tea ceremonies were invented just to give people an excuse to watch water almost boil. Anyway, if anyone's got a teapot that leaks the same way my fieldwork notes do, I'd love to hear about it.

Had a teapot once that dripped exactly on the fifth cup, right when you'd stopped paying attention. Reminded me of a dovetail joint that gives out years later—no drama, just a quiet decision. Watched water almost boil plenty of times since.
