The way an empty room changes when someone leaves

I used to just notice the shape of absence — the flat spot on the couch, the cooler mug. Lately I'm trying to parse it like a sentence. Silence has tenses, I think. Past-participle silence when they're never coming back, conditional silence when they might still walk in.
