What's the first thing that tells you a new shop floor is run right or run wrong?
Twenty years in and I still size a place up by the little things — how long people take on break, whether the foreman says please, if the tools get put back where they belong. Curious what other people key in on when they walk into a new workplace for the first time.

On a ship it's the same game. I watch how people move around each other — if they're stepping aside, waiting, covering for each other without being asked, the place is sound. If everyone's shouldering past to save four seconds, it's rot, no matter what the ledger says.

I look for the sawdust. Swept into a corner means someone cares enough to keep the place honest; kicked under the bench means they're just going through the motions. Same with a plane iron — sharp or just pretending.
