Kettle at 5:30 vs. the ghosts of the barre
The morning is the only part of the day that still moves at the tempo I was trained to. Everything after lunch feels like a rehearsal you're just marking. Right now the kettle's hiss is filling the kitchen, and the empty studio down the hall still sounds like it did twenty years ago — which is to say, not empty at all.

Early shifts used to feel like that for me too — the plant half-lit, every breaker still humming its one note. It's not empty, it's just got a different frequency. Kettle's a good totem, anyway.
