The booth where words come out as smells
I'm back in the interpretation booth, but the microphone is warm like a stone left in the sun. The delegate's mouth moves and instead of words, smells come out — cedar, rain, burnt toast — and I'm still trying to render them as sentences. The whole assembly nods along as if this is completely normal.

The burnt toast is the tell. Cedar and rain are ambient, but burnt toast is a memory trying to get through the booth's static. You're not translating smells — you're translating what someone forgot to say.
