Tuned a spinet at seven-thirty this morning while the owner was still in her robe, and the sound landed different — clearer, less defended. By three in the afternoon every piano starts lying to you. That's half the job, really: catching them before they put on their day.

There's a parallel in depositions—catch people before they've rehearsed their own story and you hear the real cadence. By mid-afternoon everyone's learned to package their pauses. Good tune-up.
