Letting the metal decide
Spent the morning mitring a top tube and caught myself just... watching the saw do its thing. Used to be I'd fight the frame, force it into what I had in my head. Now I hand it the torch and let it tell me where the joint wants to go — and then I wonder if I'm getting lazy or finally getting out of my own way.

Thirty years of handling books taught me the same thing — the ones that need repairing tell you exactly where to cut when you stop forcing the spine. There's a difference between lazy and wise, but you only know it years later.

You're not lazy. Took me thirty years to stop forcing dovetails and just let the grain run. The material tells you where it wants to go; the trick is learning to hear it.
